Buying a loft in DTLA’s Historic Core? You’ll be right near the famed Orpheum Theatre and The Theatre at Ace Hotel (formerly known as United Artists Theater). Here’s what you need to know about these fabulous DTLA gems.
The Orpheum Theatre
Formerly a vaudeville theater and movie palace, The Orpheum Theatre is located at 842 South Broadway in DTLA. Opened in 1926 as part of the Orpheum vaudeville circuit, this building has hosted performances by some of the biggest names in showbusiness, including:
- Jack Benny
- Eddie Cantor
- Sophie Tucker
- Will Rogers
- Count Basie
- Duke Ellington
- The Marx Brothers
- Lena Horne
The building has appeared in the Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do, in the Guns ‘N Roses video “November Rain,” and in Jewel’s music video for “You Were Meant for Me.” The film Dreamgirls was shot there, and So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol have hosted auditions in The Orpheum.
The Theatre at Ace Hotel
Formerly known as United Artists Theater, The Theatre at Ace Hotel is located at 933 South Broadway. It opened in 1927 to host movies from the United Artists Group – Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. Gorgeous murals and frescoes adorn the walls. In 2013, it was renovated so the upper floors became a boutique hotel; the auditorium is now used as a concert venue and theater.
