When you buy a condo or loft for sale in downtown Los Angeles, moving day comes a lot faster than you think it will – but this moving checklist will help you be ready for the big event.
Moving Checklist
2 Months Before You Move
Start asking friends and family to help you move now, unless you plan to hire a moving company. If you do plan to hire movers, schedule your moving day with them now, too. Need to book a hotel? Now’s the time.
Start putting together a file that includes all the documents you need for the move (especially if it’s an employment-related move and your employer is paying some or all of your relocation costs).
Get your kids registered at new schools, find the best vet in the area, and start cleaning up your house so you can pack effectively.
1 Month Before You Move
If you haven’t hired a moving company, do it now. Have a yard sale or put items in your Facebook sales groups to clear out unnecessary clutter you don’t want to move, and donate the excess.
Tell your bank, magazine subscriptions and other services that you’re moving, and arrange for your doctor and dentist to transfer your records to your new providers.
Start shopping for things you’ll need in the new place, too, like rugs and furnishings – but don’t take out any new credit or rack up big bills, because that can affect your loan eligibility.
Pick up all the moving supplies you need, and start wrapping things up.
2 Weeks Before You Move
Put things in your “Essentials” box. These are things you’ll need on your first night in the new house – that way, you won’t have to dig through multiple boxes to find toothbrushes, paper plates and extra baby wipes.
Start arranging for deliveries and confirm your moving truck (or your reservation with the movers).
1 Week Before You Move
Now’s the time to address last-minute details. Put your mailbox key, garage door opener and light remotes in a bag to hand to the new owners of your current home. Get rid of everything you can’t ship to your new home, too, and make arrangements for kids and pets to go stay with someone you trust on moving day.
Empty and defrost your freezer, clean the fridge and the oven, and make sure other appliances are spotless, too.
